Emir Abdelkader El-Djezairi (1808-1883) is a national hero and the founder of the modern Algerian state.
He led the armed resistance against the French invasion for 15 years (1832-1847), proving to be a successful military and political leader. After his capture, he was exiled to Damascus, Syria.
In Damascus, he became famous for his humanitarian work, saving thousands of Christians during the 1860 conflict. He is globally celebrated as a leader who combined the fight for freedom with high moral and humanistic values
