Emir Abdelkader: The Algerian Hero
Emir Abdelkader (1808–1883) is the most important national hero of Algeria.
Leader of Resistance: When France invaded Algeria in 1830, Abdelkader brought the tribes together to fight back. He led the war of resistance for over 15 years and established the first organized Algerian state.
Man of Honor: He was famous for his honesty and respect for all people. He treated his French prisoners humanely, which was unusual at the time.
Life in Exile: After his defeat, he was exiled to France and later to Damascus, Syria.
World Recognition: In Damascus, he saved thousands of Christians from danger, which made him famous globally. Leaders around the world praised his actions, including the Pope and the U.S. President.
Abdelkader is remembered as a great warrior, state-builder, and humanitarian.
